ATM Gallery NYC is pleased to present Soul States, an exhibition of paintings by American painter Scott Kahn, in conjunction with a broad exhibition of works up at Harper’s Chelsea (534 West 22nd Street), and Harper’s Apartment (51 East 74th Street). The six earnestly unsettling portraits on display are pulled from Mr. Khan’s personal collection, spanning from 1979 to 2015. The paintings depict close family members and friends, each of whom make intimate and accusing eye contact.
Portrait of Anne Kahn, (Mother) (1988) and Portrait of Gary Kahn, The Artist’s Brother (1986) are rightly hung diagonal from Kahn’s self portrait, the central work of the exhibition. All eyes are stoic and steady, with their arresting stares unnerving and befriending us at the same time. Soul States takes its name from a play on the expression “soul mates”, drawing from the artist capturing his subject’s soul “state”.
Born 1946 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Scott Kahn received his BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and his MFA from Rutgers University. Kahn currently lives and works in New York.
